The Thirteen Tribes Of Israel

Genisis 37:1-3 Jacob settled in the land where his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan. This is the story of the family of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; he was a helper to the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he had made him a long robe with sleeves.

Jacob, also known as Israel, is the Grandson of Abraham, and father to Joesph who wore the coat of many colors.

Genisis 48:1 After this Joseph was told, "Your father is ill." So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim

Genisis 48:5 Therefore your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are now mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are.

Exodus 1:1-4 "These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher."

So the leaders of the thirteen tribes are attributed to 11 of Jacob's (Israel's) sons, and the first two sons of Joesph.
